Report on Theme Session B: Integrating observations and models to improve predictions of ecosystem response to physical variability

چکیده
Understanding and managing an ecosystem without knowledge of circulation patterns and hydrography would be like trying to diagnose a patient without taking their pulse and temperature. In order to improve our understanding and prediction of ecosystem dynamics, we must improve our knowledge of the processes and mechanisms that link changes in the physical environment to biological variability. This understanding first starts with knowledge of physics, from small to large scales. In this theme session, presenters examined observations to describe the changing oceans and seas, employed observations to validate oceanographic predications, and integrated observations and models in case studies that enhanced our understanding of species and ecosystem dynamics. An underlying objective of this session was to support ecosystem-based management by providing a venue for researchers who ‘take the pulse of the ocean’ (i.e., observational oceanographers) to those who build tools for predicting and mitigating ecosystem response to climate change (i.e., bio-physical modelers).

Banded vegetation in some Australian semi-arid landscapes: 20 years of field observations to support the development and evaluation of numerical models of vegetation pattern evolution
Periodic vegetation patterns (PVPs) are striking features of many global drylands. Although they have attracted wide research study, resulting in many hypotheses, their origin and controlling factors remain unresolved. Theoretical works dominate a large literature seeking to account for the occurrence and properties of PVPs, especially banded vegetation patterns (‘tiger bush’). In light of...

The main objective of an ecosystem sustainable management is to preserve itscapacity to respond and adapt to current disturbances and/or future changes, and maintain theprovision of environmental goods and services. Two very important properties linked to thisobjective are the ecosystem resilience and resistance to disturbance factors. The objective ofthis paper is to recommend conceptual modif...
متن کاملApplying Spatial Geostatistical Analysis Models for Evaluating Variability of Soil Properties in Eastern Shiraz, Iran
ABSTRACT- The information on the spatial properties of soil is vital to improve soil management and to increase the crop productivity. Geostatistical analysis technique is one of the most important methods for determining the spatial properties of soil. The aim of this study was to investigate spatial variability of soil chemical and physical attributes for field management in eastern Shiraz, I...
متن کاملآشکارسازی تغییرات بارشهای حدی و نسبت دهی به تغییر اقلیم با استفاده از روش استاندارد انگشت نگاشت بهینه (مطالعه موردی : جنوب غرب ایران)
Understanding the changes in extreme precipitation over a region is very important for adaptation strategies to climate change. One of the most important topics in this field is detection and attribution of climate change. Over the past two decades, there has been an increasing interest for scientists, engineers and policy makers to study about the effects of external forcing to the climatic va...
متن کاملDetermining the best water quality model for the rivers in north of Iran (case study: Pasikhan River)
The aim of this paper is to study the popular models used for the simulation of major elements of a water quality system. The present study compares results of the CE-QUAL-W2 model with the WASP5 and MIKE11 models to assess the water quality of Pasikhan River. The contaminant loadings of Nitrate and Phosphate are utilized in the CE-QUAL-W2, WASP5 and MIKE11 simulations. This study is the first ...
